Flower Headbands and a Savvy Vet
I made my last shopping trip in New Mexico a couple days ago! While we were picking up shampoo, the girls spotted some headbands with enormous flowers on them.
They were $7 each, and they were the kind that poke you behind the ears.
Instead, we decided to make our own silk flower headbands. I let the girls pick some soft crocheted hair bands, plus whichever silk flowers they liked… hence the overwhelmingly preschool girl colors in this post! We also picked up some florist’s wire.
The girls put the flowers where they wanted on the headbands. Then we wrapped the wire around them, through the holes in the band. Florist’s wire is very thin and flexible. I was worried about the plastic bottom of the flower bothering their heads, but they’ve been wearing them nonstop without complaint.
The materials for these cost less than the original headbands. We can switch out the flowers later, if we want. It provided a good mini craft and dress-up fun for the girls during a busy week.
It’s just hard to beat pink and purple when you’re 2 to 4 years old!
My older daughter’s expression is no reflection on the headbands. Her little sister kept trying to give her kisses (picture proof in the family scrapbook pages below).
Things are getting hectic here, in preparation for our move. Yesterday the vet came by to do health checks so we can travel legally with the horses.
My older daughter, the lover of cats and all other animals, wasn’t going to miss this for the world!
She ran to get herself dressed. She chose red leggings with a white angel print on them, a fuzzy pink jacket with pink silk rosettes for buttons, and pink and black rain boots. I wondered what the vet would think.
I needn’t have worried. The vet was very laid-back – at one with everything, at one with the ’70s. He was the perfect sort of person for poking needles into flighty horses’ necks.
My daughter watched from outside the paddock while the vet and I dodged horses. She was very taken with him, smiling and refusing to answer any of his questions.
I think the feeling was mutual.
One the way back down from the paddock, the vet said, “Well, ten hours. That’s a long drive for the horses. Can’t you just click your heels and get back there?”
Then he said, “Or maybe your daughter can. She looks like she might be magical!”
I think he was a very astute vet. (And I might be a little glad we’re not sticking around for that interest to develop!)
Next week from Kansas!!!
awww, your girls are very sweet and I love their pretty new headbands!!
Darling, Debbie! The headband idea AND the girls! See you tomorrow. Yikes! I’d better get off this computer and get busy.
I bet the girls were thrilled with your more comfy approach to style. Love that they love big flowers! I know you and your family, horses included , will have a safe trek to Kansas. I’ll be keeping you in my prayers, and can’t wait to hear stories of your adventures in your new home.
