Hebrews 12:11
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful.
Pretty good jumping-off place to bring in all that the writers of the proverbs say about the rod, which is a “rod, staff, a stick used to assist in walking, discipline, and guidance.” So…a few…with only a little comment.
Proverbs 13:24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him.
Why? Because the father sees farther into the future of that child than the next hour or the next two years. The Amplified says “…diligently disciplines and punishes him early.” “Early” being so important, because a green twig is much more easily bent.
Proverbs 22:15 Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.
Tough call here that I think needs prayer and wisdom. What is rebellion, what is foolishness, what is just immaturity? (More later!)
Proverbs 23:13-14 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with a rod, he will not die. Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death.
He must have seen our reluctance! But he says you’re not going kill him… but SAVE him!
Proverbs 29:15 The rod of correction imparts wisdom, but a child left to himself disgraces his mother.
Our correcting him is how a child gains his own wisdom.
