New Year's Resolution

I’m writing this on the fly this morning, breaking my own rule to let a post sit at least a day before launching it into the blogisphere.

Happy New Year to you! The holidays are over, and a month of nothingness lies before us. There is no soil to be planted, no graduations or new school years to take us somewhere else, no holidays calling us to the stores to buy gifts for every loved one. Everything outside and on the calendar is dormant (at least until MLKJ day), quietly waiting.

Any forward movement this time of year comes from within us, from the fresh resolve that we’ll change something for the better this year. With nothing to distract, we’re free to see the blank slate that January waves under our noses, tempting us to imagine boundless possibilities.

I wish I saw things this way every morning of my life.

So I’m going to do something totally wild and crazy with my blank slate. I’m going to post every day in January. I know, it’s life on the wild side here at Letters from the Loft.

I tend to overthink things, and my perfectionistic tendencies lead me to back out of half of what I start. This month, I’m going to post without thinking – brief posts – and see what comes out.

Will I really regret this? Or will I push myself out of a rut and find myself going full speed ahead?

Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Luke 6:45
His mercies begin afresh each day. Lamentations 3:23
The birds are molting. If only man could molt also – his mind once a year its errors, his heart once a year its useless passions. James Allen

Happy New Year’s, and happy resolution-making!
