Houses Past

My husband and I have been married a dozen years now. We’ve moved about six times (depending how you count it). Before I show pictures of our current house, I thought it would be fun to walk down memory lane!

The walk turned into an all-day hike, so I’ll give the tour of our current place tomorrow or Friday.

Where I Grew Up

My parents have lived in the same house for more than 40 years. They’ve done a lot of work to it over the years!

I asked my parents to scan some of their old pictures for me. A stray picture got included accidentally – the one of Annie with one of my husband’s adopted brothers. It’s a good reminder that a home is made not only of windows and walls, but also by the relationships that are built there!

Where My Husband Grew Up

My husband grew up in Tennessee and then moved with his family to Colorado during his early teens. This is the beautiful home his parents built (if you can see around the huge horse – hi, Nugget!).

The second picture is of my husband with the youngest adopted girl. My in-laws have their house on the market now so they can move closer to us.

The Bungalow

The first house where my husband and I lived was a teeny tiny bungalow in an alley, behind a row of rentals.

We lived there for a year while I was finishing college. I parked my bike in the covered shelter in the alley out our front window. After classes, I rode my bike to the grocery store, carrying the grocery bags on the handlebars on my way home.

The balloon picture is to celebrate my husband being accepted to medical school! (Don’t hit that precious head on the ceiling!)

One-Bedroom Apartment

For the first two years of med school, we moved out of the sticks into the big city. We lived in a shady apartment complex within walking distance of the med school, where I got my first real job.

We used to pile all of our furniture into our tiny, short hallway of a kitchen so my husband could play fetch with our puppy, Tess. Our downstairs neighbor really loved us. 🙂 We loved her, too! She was an old Korean widow, and she cooked food that permeated the complex. Sometimes she invited us over to have some.

That’s me with Barney. RIP, Barney.

House With A Yard

After the first two years of med school, part of the class had the option to move to another city – the same city where my husband works now. Here we lived in our first house with a yard. Our new neighbor’s habit was marijuana, but I don’t think that permeated our house. (Although, there was that time……… Nah!)

The outside pictures were taken on a day when my grandparents came to help clean up our yard.

First-Time Home Owners

My husband was accepted to residency within the same city. We didn’t have to move, but we were tired of renting. We bought our first house on five acres in the country.

My husband built the deck and retaining wall at that house.

The twins were also born during those years. Mom and I had fun painting their nursery.

Extended Vacation At The Lodge

We had to move to a bigger city again for fellowship. A realtor matched us up with a family who needed to live closer to town for a while. We rented their amazing mountain home at a great price!

It was basically a large warehouse that they had renovated.

My husband also built the deck there, on arrangement with the owner.

The most amazing part of that house was the twenty foot ceiling!

I did not dust the ceiling fans up there. My husband assembled scaffolding whenever we needed to change the light bulbs.

Final Landing

A few months ago, we finally made it home. We hope this will be the last place we live on this earth. There’s definitely enough work here to keep us busy for the rest of our lives!

Thanks for reminiscing with me! I’ll be back in a day or two with a tour of the new place.
