Just Some Blog Business: A Year of Better Cooking
Fall is here! I’ve had a nice little break from the blog, unpacking more boxes and getting settled into our school routine. Has Fall brought a new rhythm to your days, or energy for doing something new? For the next year of blog posts, I plan to learn to cook better meals. My husband finally has a somewhat predictable schedule, for the first time in our marriage. Even the evenings when he’s not home, the kids are old enough to appreciate a home-cooked meal. (Click... September 16 – Psalm 73: 16-17
Psalm 73: 16-17 But when I considered how to understand this, it was too great an effort for me and too painful, Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then I understood…. Hasn’t this happened to you?! You finally resort to prayer : ), and then everything is different. It’s not like He directly answers your question or problem — like in the Bible when it seems like He didn’t hear the question, but he answers something completely different that... Read More
September 15 – Luke 11:9-13
Luke 11:9-13 “So I say to you; Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give hi m a snake instead? Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your father... Read More
September 14 – Galatians 5:16, 24, 25
Galatians 5:16, 24, 25 Amp But I say, walk and live habitually in the (Holy) Spirit — responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh — of human nature without God…. And those who belong to Christ Jesus, the Messiah, have crucified the flesh — the Godless human nature — with its passions and appetites and desires. If we live by the (Holy) Spirit, let us also walk by... Read More
September 13 – Colossians 3:1-2; Galatians 3:3
Mom’s internet was down for a week or so. (Isn’t that about like having to wash clothes on a washboard? Or like doing dishes by hand, in the sink? 🙂 ) We’ll catch up on her daily Notes to Annie by posting two per day for a while. Mom writes these notes for Annie on 3×5 cards. September 9 through 12 included large direct quotes from Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster. We’ll skip those days here because of possible copyright issues. Colossians... Read More
September 9 – I John 2:16
I John 2:16 Amp For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification], and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance of one’s own resources or in the stability of earthly things] — these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]. Even though this verse still doesn’t exactly answer for me “what is ‘the world’?,” it does help to show what being... Read More
September 8 – John 14-18; James 1:27
John 14-18; James 1:27 If you have time, read John 14-17, Annie. It’s all Jesus talking, and it’s what He tells His disciples between the last supper and when He was betrayed — basically His last words with them. Look at what He says about the world — that word is in there about 39 times in those 4 chapters. He’s really warning them about the world — that there is to be a difference between them and it. The world can’t receive Him.... Read More
The One Year Blogiversary (And a New Challenge)
One year ago, on September 9, 2010, I hit the “publish” button on my first post in the blogisphere. I was stuck in the mountains, getting ready to be snowed in for my third winter, nursing a baby for hours a day, and changing four sets of diapers. My only goal for the blog, besides not going nuts, was to learn to take better pictures of my kids. (Click here to read more or leave a comment on The One Year Blogiversary...) September 7 – I John 2:15
I John 2:15 Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. We’re going to tackle a subject now that is so hard. And I’m tackling it with a log in my eye, so it’s even harder. When the high school kids met here for Bible study, we spent weeks on this, always trying to pin down a definition of “the world,” and never ever really succeeded. So why try to study it,... September 6 – Hebrews 10:24
Hebrews 10:24 Amp And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities;… I like this verse in the Amplified, especially “watching over one another.” I see each part of the body truly caring for all the other parts, giving a hand to one who has fallen and encouraging that part to keep trying. “Studying” sounds deliberate...
